How does the American constitution define the role and extent of power of the American President?
Politics and power is an important theme for all our Presidents. What did the President do when faced with external (Cold War) and internal (law and order, protest,) threats. How far did Presidential power increase? What were the constraints on the President and his office? Examine each of these areas to establish the facts. Make sure these notes are brief and organized:
The circumstances of President Truman's appointment
Personality/leadership style
Powers exercised within the Constitution: Election results/mandate, Relationship with Congress/policy-making
Intelligence Agencies and their use
Secrecy and corruption
Produce a sliding scale, from 'collegiate/democratic' to 'imperial'. Place the name of Truman on the scale. Retain this so that you can add on other Presidents later on. Be prepared to justify your decisions!
