Batista was a military officer, dictator, and politician. He was born on Jan. 16 1901 and began working at a very young age. He was a self-educated man and joined the army in 1921. He was the union leader of Cuba's soldiers and the leader of the 1933 "Sergeants' Revolt" that replaced the provisional government of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada at the request of the coalition that had recently ousted President Gerardo Machado.
"Sergeants' Revolt"
-Sergeant Fulgencio Batista upset with restriction on promotions on enlisted men to junior office positions and pay reduction.
-Led mutiny against officers and seized control of Camp Columbia in Havana.
-Enlisted men at La Cabana joined the mutiny.
-Revolt also connected to the corrupt government.
-Opposition student groups met with Batista and signed the "Proclamation of the Revolutionaries" which called for restructuring of political and economic system of Cuba.
-The students and the military united to take control of Cuba.
-Batista then met students from the DEU to form new government.
-Batista became commander of army, Grau became president.
After the seventh congress of the Cominterm (Third International) decreed the "proper united front" alliance with bougeosis organisations, the CCP established close relations with Batista. November 1940, Batista allowed the Communists to control Cuban Confederation of Labor. Leaders of Communist party held high posts in Batista's gov. The Communists persued two parallel policies overtly they criticised Batista and overtly they cooperated with him.
Batista forced Grau to resign in January 1934 replacing him with Carlo Mendieta and within five days the U.S. recognized Cuba's government which lasted 11 months. Batista had the support from U.S. recognized Cuba's new government which lasted 11 months. Batista had support from U.S> who feared Grau's socialistic reforms but saw Batista as a stabilizing force for American interests. Batista also had suppoirt from gangster Meyer Lansky that lsated over thirty years. Batista was a dictator that contgrolled puppet presidents and ruled in his own self interests gaining income from his mob connections etc.
